Jim Aitkenhead on Giving back How and why we give back to the community

There’s more to our work than making a living.

At Hunter, Aitkenhead & Walker, the wider community is at the heart of everything we do. From applying environmentally-friendly practices to the day-to-day running of our office, to building long-term relationships with our clients as standard, the things that our people care about, are things that we care about.

And that includes charity.

How we give back

Each year, we donate 1% of our turnover to various charities. From March 2017 to March 2018, that meant that we gave a total of £7,000 to:

  • Action Aid
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Amnesty International
  • Barnardo’s
  • Breast Cancer UK
  • Humane Society International
  • International Animal Rescue (Borneo Orangutan Rescue)
  • K9 Angels
  • Loros
  • MD support
  • MSF UK
  • Oxfam Syria appeal
  • Recreation Ground – Wymeswold
  • Schistosomiasis Control Initiative
  • Wolds choir
  • Wymeswold Running Club

In addition, I receive logistical and administrative support for my annual fundraiser. This September, Alasdair and I are attempting the Great North Run in Newcastle. We’ll keep you all updated on how that goes!

Who we support

We donate to organisations who come to our attention in one of three ways:

Experience: As part of our role as an individual’s financial planner we form long-term relationships. We become aware of the various trials and tribulations suffered by our customers from time to time, and our commitment to charitable good causes means that in a small way we do something to support our clients, as well as the wider community.

Staff nominations: The charities and community organisations we support reflect the preferences of the staff, as everyone in the company can nominate their favourite charity. So, for example, I support the Wold’s Choir and my donation this year has enabled them to run a concert where all the takings go to a local charity instead of having to be split to cover the costs of running the choir.

Client fundraising: As well as our “end of year” donations we also will sponsor any client who is fundraising during the year for a good cause – so please ask!

Why we give back

Giving back to good causes means we can support our customers and staff. Making sure that the causes that are close to the hearts of our colleagues and clients, means that we can help more people, whilst reinforcing the bonds we have with the people who matter.

Our support for charitable good causes reflects the ethos and values of the directors and staff at Hunter, Aitkenhead & Walker. We believe that work is more than making a living and we wish to be part of our community and aim to support that community if we can.

One member of staff commented this year: “This makes me proud to work for Hunter, Aitkenhead & Walker”. And we hope that it will also make our customers proud.
